Many people when they think about being a stay at home mom/wife, have the thought: “What do you do all day long?” or “That sounds boring, I could never!” But until you’ve lived the life of one of us and fully embraced your role, you won’t know just how fulfilling, delightful, and full of variety it can be. Being at home provides a setting for growing, learning, exploring, and gaining new skills. It is a peaceful and inspiring place where you can cultivate all that God created you to be and embrace the skills and talents that He has blessed you with.
I remember going through a season of drought at home, where I felt like I ran out of things to clean, meals to make, errands to run, and things to organize. But I had a short sighted view of all that homemaking could be. It’s correct to say that sitting on the couch all day staring at the ceiling, out the window, or at your phone is boring. And it’s also correct to say that deep cleaning every room in your home 3x a day, can become unfulfilling (and straight up unnecessary). But that’s not what women at home are doing, or should be doing anyway. There are endless tasks, sure, if that’s how you want to look at it. There can be seemingly mundane or routine days, if you view it that way. And you can feel stuck between those 4 walls, if that’s what you make it out to be. But I am pleased to say that I have found my purpose at home, feel more gratified than ever before, and have joy in growing in my role as a homemaker.
Once I confirmed that God has me right where He wants me, and I decided to make the most of my time at home, I began to do just that. Now, this rut I found myself in happened to be before I had my daughter, and babies do tend to give you something to do; however, I believe that even women with multiple children can and do get into the same rut I was in, feeling dissatisfied with their position and wondering if there is more. All this to say, being at home doesn’t have to be limited to cooking, cleaning, and completing repetitive, scheduled tasks. This is where hobbies come in and shake things up. I took an online quiz on pinterest years ago about which “style of homemaker” I was, and it exemplified the fact that there is so much room for differing activities, interests, and hobbies within homemaking. I definitely don’t remember my quiz results, but there were countless types they had listed. Hobbies and interests are what make life, well, interesting.

Hobbies can and should bring you joy, variety, and personal growth. I have found a love for many hobbies, and I want to explore many more. It seems I have a running list in my head that I want to pursue and hopefully master.
Some hobbies I currently have are:
Reading
Writing/journaling
Cooking from scratch
Baking
Thrifting/decorating
Crafting
Going on walks
Gardening
Playing piano and ukulele
Hosting friends

And some hobbies that I plan on getting into are:
Sewing (my machine is currently in the shop)
Gardening (I have so much improving to do)
Canning and preserving
Knitting
Making more household items and products from scratch
And this is just my list! The possibilities really are endless. There is so much you can do and create at home. I find that hobbies also help me to use my time wisely, develop my skill-set, and become a more well-rounded and capable homemaker. Cultivating new skills leads to developing one’s character and attributes, and since hobbies and interests become part of your very nature, you should take care to choose wisely what you spend your time on. Every hobby you have should, in some way, bring glory to God and joy to you. God cares how we spend our minutes and hours.
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”Ephesians 5:15–16
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Colossians 3:23-24
I’m glad you’re here, friend!
