I have always had an old soul when it comes to music. My hot-take is that music was more moving, wholesome, original, and full of talent back in the day. Modern music just doesn’t have the same effect on me as older music does, and that goes for Christian music as well. There are many sound Christian worship songs these days, but I have just never been quite as keen on Christian radio or modern worship songs as I am a good ole’ hymn.

I enjoy listening to classic hymns while I cook or bake, fold laundry, play with my daughter, etc. I also enjoy playing these same beloved hymns on my piano or ukulele and singing along. I hope to teach and pass on these wonderful songs of faith and love to my children. All that being said, there are some hymns that hold a special place in my heart, and that I often find myself humming or singing out of the blue. I sat down with my notebook and hymnal and composed this longer than expected list of my most beloved classic hymns. I hope this list inspires you to look up these hymns and give them a listen, or to learn and commit them to heart. They are inspiring, uplifting, and encouraging to my faith, and they often express in poetic words and melody what I have trouble conveying myself.
What A Friend We Have In Jesus - Joseph M. Scriven, 1855
Blessed Assurance - Fanny Crosby, 1873
It Is Well With My Soul - Horatio Spafford, 1873
Sweet Hour Of Prayer - William W. Walford, 1842
How Great Thou Art - Carl Boberg, 1885
He Leadeth Me: O Blessed Thought - Joseph H. Gilmore, 1862
Jesus Paid It All - Elvina M Hall, 1865
To God Be The Glory - Fanny Crosby, 1875
Trust And Obey - John H Sammis, 1887
Be Thou My Vision - Eleanor H Hull, 1927
His Eye Is On The Sparrow - Civilla D Martin, 1905
Great Is Thy Faithfulness - Thomas O Chisholm, 1923
‘Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus - Louisa Stead, 1882
Come Thou Font Of Every Blessing - Robert Robinson, 1758
The Solid Rock - Edward Mote, 1834
Softly And Tenderly Jesus Is Calling - Will L Thompson, 1880
There’s Something About That Name - Gloria Gaither, 1970
Victory In Jesus - E.M Bartlett, 1939
Wonderful Grace Of Jesus - Haldor Lillenas, 1918
Amazing Grace - John Newton, 1779
I want to include two more because they are some that my daughter loves to hear me sing or play on the piano. Fun fact: singing Jesus Loves Me was a sure fire way to make our daughter smile when she was around 8-10 months. These songs are near and dear to my heart:
Jesus Loves Me - Anna Warner, 1859
Oh, How I Love Jesus - Frederick Whitfield, 1855

I hope you enjoyed reading this list of hymns I love and adore. I encourage you to look up these hymns and read their beautiful, poetic, and powerful language. These writers had a gift of expressing the simplicity of the gospel, but also the cost and the significance of it. They continue to inspire me to look to Jesus and to give Him glory. I pray this blesses you, friend!
O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Psalm 95:1
